All NIH visitors must go through a security clearance at the new NIH Gateway Center to receive a visitor's badge. Visitors may be required to pass through a metal detector and have bags/purses inspected or x-rayed. All visitors must present a government-issued photo ID to enter the campus. Due to crowding in the morning, we strongly recommend entering security at least one hour before the meeting start time.

Public Transportation
The Washington D.C. Metrorail system has a station on the NIH campus called "Medical Center." Upon exiting the station, it is a short walk through the NIH Gateway Center to the adjacent Natcher Conference Center.

Metrorail service is available from National Airport and from Union Station (railway). Take Metro's Red Line to the Medical Center Station.

For more information, visit Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and NIH Campus Shuttle Schedules

The Natcher Conference Center (Building 45) is located on the NIH main campus. Visitor parking is limited, so take public transportation if possible. The campus is located on the Red Line at the Medical Center Metro stop. Proceed to the NIH Gateway Center for security clearance. The Natcher Conference Center is located a short distance behind the Gateway Center.

See http://www.nih.gov/about/visitor/ for more information.

The estimated fare (one-way) from the three local airports to Natcher are:

  • National Airport (DCA): $60
  • Dulles International Airport (IAD): $60
  • Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI): $80

We have made arrangements with the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Bethesda. Reservations can be made at this website: https://aws.passkey.com/go/HIV6. This hotel is ideally located along the Red Line at the Bethesda Metro stop, which is one stop from the NIH main campus. Travel time from the Washington National Airport to the hotel is about 45 minutes by metro or taxi. The metro fare can range from $3.50 (off-peak) to $5.75 (peak) from National Airport to Bethesda Metro station and taxis from $50 - 75 one-way from the various Washington, DC airports (DCA - National, BWI - Baltimore/Washington and IAD - Dulles International). There is no requirement to use this hotel and you are free to find alternative accommodations in the area on your own.

Breakfast can be found at your hotel or in the cafeteria at the Natcher Conference Center.  We highly recommend you take advantage of this second option to arrive early, proceed through security before it becomes crowded, and then relax at breakfast before the start of the meeting.  Lunch is similarly available in the Natcher cafeteria.  If desired, box lunches can be ordered in advance for each meeting day here: https://eurestconferencecatering.catertrax.com/shopcustadminlogin.asp You will need to create an account. For dinner there are numerous restaurants in the Bethesda and Rockville areas offering fare from the mundane to the exotic.
